Natural Beauty

Qualities I believe someone who evokes natural beauty embodies:

1. An appreciation, enthusiasm for life! Easy going, happy go lucky people with an ability to find meaning in a simple, fleeting moment just as easily as they can in a large-scale or life-changing one…

2. A love for real food; which means enjoying your indulgences once in a while but who understand the importance of a balanced diet and quality of food and are disciplined about it.

3. A desire to challenge their mind and body. Expanding one's understanding via books and art or trying a new workout or a yoga pose. Who value physical, cognitive, and emotional growth.

4. An ability to walk out the door, with confidence and ready to conquer the world, every day!

Fashion 1 0 1: Part 14

Start to think about your clothes like they were made to last. Head fashion designers keep saying that fashion should not be disposable. So, start to clean your clothes the right way: it's different for polyester and cotton and wool. Tags will help you decide what to do and then there is the internet to dig through for detailed instructions. I always use the handwash mode on the machine for washing all my clothes and also I never put them in the dryer - the result is I use the same clothes for more than 15 years. If you own a piece for so long that it got damaged over time, then remember that you can shave the pilling on a sweater, patch a hole on the elbow and if you lost weight then all your clothes can be adjusted for the new measurements. Some things you can do on your own while it is better to have others done by a professional. A lot of skirts that you see on this blog were a size or two bigger, they have been adjusted to fit my new measurements. Why is this important? You're caring for the environment because you're limiting trash production. You're also supporting local artisans and so, helping people whose jobs are going extinct. For example, I always go to a cobbler to get my broken shoes fixed but many people choose to throw away things in the excitement of buying new stuff.

Don't get me wrong, I do not condemn shopping, it builds and nourishes the economy. But here is a thought, in the good old days people got their clothes mended from tailors, shoes fixed from the cobbler, got small little parts of a blender and stuff from the dingy little stores located in some tiny alleys - this all paid the small local businesses. Now the mentality is we are looking for something to go wrong with our stuff so that we can buy new stuff and throw away the old stuff.

I do not condemn shopping but I condemn the stigma attached to repeating clothes, needing something new to wear to every party, having things in the closet with their price tag on and yet complaining about having nothing to wear, throwing away stuff without even trying to get it fixed first and just mindless shopping for self-gratification or shopping for the sake of having-everything-everyone-else has.

The clothes that live with you for a long time, get a lot of stories ingrained in them. One of my childhood friends wore skirts that her mother used to wear when she was in college. Those skirts were a different fashion altogether, they were unique because they were not in the market at that time and she got a lot of compliments on her clothes and a lot of surprised reactions when she said this is my mother's skirt. So if you've ever been given a garment worn by your grandmother or your grandfather in their youth, you know what I am talking about. Also, it is good for the pocket - you can save money and rather spend it on some good things like real estate and health!

'The true cost' is a very good documentary on this topic. I highly recommend it.

This is the last part of the series.

Feathers in your cap

Happiness can not be dependent on anyone thing or person. I feel your hard work and positivity should not focus on what you want and your mental peace should be independent of the outcome. To be happy is really a decision and not a by-product of activity or possession.

Life is a journey towards your goals and ambitions but they all cannot come true in one month or year! You add them, like feathers in your cap, one by one ... over a lifetime. And by being dependent on outcome one is setting up themselves for an unhappiness journey of a lifetime.

Truly Patriotic

Is 'patriotism' a byproduct of all the wars and battles which had been fought by tribes, clans, cults, religious groups to survive? Is it soon becoming an obsolete emotion? Because this generation is born and brought up in comparatively calmer surroundings (than the world wars and British Raj) and also this generation lives all over the place. We are born in one country, a study in another, work in the third country and then retire in a new country altogether. So which country are we going to be 'patriotic' about? And I do not mean for a sports game, I mean in the time of war.

Is 'patriotism' one of the hurdles in the path to world peace? If there was no patriotism, but only general regard and respect for mankind, no matter where they were born or bred, wouldn't the need to own, capture, secure and protect a manmade boundary disappear? It is wonderful to be proud of one's heritage but if that converts into thinking that we are superior to the other cultures, then it is not really a noble concept.

From what we know Earth could be the only planet with life ... found anywhere nearby or probably found anywhere in the billions of galaxies, it would be great if we are patriotic for the Earth in its entirety and save its environment, life, and beauty!

Exercise today!

In the last 5 years, I went through bad health issues, be it surgeries, injuries, complete bed rest and never-ending medications. Yes, it brings a lot of interruptions in my grand plan of weight loss (I weighed 180 pounds not long ago) but it also made me realize the value of health and how much I wanted to look and feel fit.

I think all of us have our own struggles that the world doesn't know about, life isn't rosy for anyone, so take some time off but get back to your workouts as soon as you can. 'I will start from Monday/ 1st Jan/ 1st of next month' doesn't work. Do not procrastinate, resume today even if it is just 20 minutes, because something may come up on Monday or your planned date in the future. The future is always unpredictable.

Lost

We are taught to work hard, to make a lot of money and in the process we become our jobs. Do we live in a system that can sometimes be kind of a prison? When you ask someone 'What do you do?' the answer is always 'I work at so and so company'. Why is it never 'I sing, I dance, I daydream'? Our job becomes our identity, why are we defined, validated or labeled by our jobs? Is the basis of who we are lost?

Food

In earlier days human race faced two periods - a bountiful period and a famine. In today's times for all of us every single meal is a bounty with no famine in sight. Does our body really need so much food? If we don't starve it a little bit then it will never get a chance to use the stored fats.

Laughter Club

Morning is a rush time for most of us and smiling consciously is the last thing on our mind. When I saw people in laughter clubs at various parks in India I wondered how and why such a weird thing works? Laughing without reason early in the morning? Crazy! I thought. Today I know why these clubs work the way do.

When I started taking pictures for this blog I didn't smile in the pics but then the pics looked blah so I 'had' to smile just for those 5 minutes. Smiling consciously as the day starts can change the mood of the whole day. There were times when I woke up in pain, agony or was sick but smiling in front of the camera for 5 minutes changed something in me and how my day went, for some reason it recharged me.

Tinge of India

What is the first thing you notice when you land in India?

Colors! Too bad if you said smell ;-)

India is a brightly colorful country (in every which way). Most of the people in this side of the world wear a lot of pastels, grays, black and whites. Looking at today's picture now I feel it needed a tinge of India!

Muffin Top

Low rise jeans became popular as it makes a woman's torso look longer and possibly thinner. Low rise hip hugger jeans forces the skin and fat around the waist, back and upper buttocks to spill out over the pants. So it is not for anyone with a fat tummy, it simply looks bad. I have made the mistake of buying low rise simply because it is available and popular.

If you own one and are stuck with it now like the one I am wearing in today's picture then try to wear longer and a loose tops on it (In a way it defies the purpose of wearing low rise). The best option would obviously be to lose the belly fat or buying mid/high rise.

When it comes to styling if I had to make a list of what NOT to do then at number one position it would be 'Never sport a muffin top'.
